Here we are again.
I was thinking about what topic to choose for the first post and, looking to my wallpaper, I got it :
MODELS
But why models? They show and represent fashion, so I think that this is a good starting point.
Being black has never been easy anywhere, and the fashion industry wouldn’t be different. We have come a long way since Dorothea Towles started modeling in Paris in the 50s. Then, they have came out some other top models in the industry along the years: Naomi Sims, Iman, Grace Jones or Naomi Campbell.
Today, it seems that everything is already done. There are a lot of black models, men and women, in fashion. The perfect end for any given fairy tale.
But just try to ask someone : What do you think about the presence of black models in fashion? Do you think they are enough? Are they the same as a white model? Most of them will answer:
Things have changed a lot, and today black and white models are the same.
There are a lot of black models in advertising, campaigns, fashion shows, e-commerce. Everywhere.
But not. Well, they would be right because things have changed a lot from the 50s, but the work is not finished. Even if nowadays’ society is fighting for diversity and equality, black models presence in fashion is minimal. Although fashion is trying to solve it. According to The Fashion Spot, in SS15, 84% of the models were white, and it was a 78,2% in 2016, That is, just a 8,3% were black models, and a 4% were asian. If we pay attention to the last year, in February 2018 fashion shows, 32,5% of the models were black, twice the percentage of 2017, so fortunately, something is happening.
This is not about the fashion industry being full of black, asian or hispanic models. We just want the fashion industry to be the reflection of the diverse society we live in, because, at the end of the day, fashion is addressed to the society, customers that need to identify themselves with the brands and their pieces. Because , somehow, society builds fashion and leads its way.
